Elsword (Korean: 엘소드 Elsword) is a free-to-play, action-oriented massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by KOG Studios. It was first released at the end of 2007 in South Korea and later localized and made available to play in other regions. The game was originally developed as a spiritual successor to KOG Studios' other game, Grand Chase, specifically evolving the graphics from 2D to 3D. This MMORPG boasts a 2.5D side-scrolling gameplay with beat'em up combat, manga-inspired visuals, and an immersive fantasy world. The story of the game follows the title protagonist Elsword and the El Search Party as they travel across the world of Elrios to protect the El from the encroaching demonic forces.

In the land of Elrios, the world is given life thanks to the power of the El, a mystical gem that radiates energy. However, the harmony of Elrios was disrupted by one of the masters of the El, Solace, when he kidnaps the El Lady, the one chosen by the goddess Ishmael to watch over the El. This caused the El to become unstable and explode, leading to its current existence as numerous crystal shards of energy scattered across the continent. While the Nasod and human civilizations began to disappear, survivors could only prosper where larger El Shards were, as those shards hold great enough power to sustain the nature and civilization around it. Towns and villages were rebuilt around these large shards with the remaining El Masters protecting them to restore power to the El. But with the disruption came the rise of wicked beings who seek the power of the El for their own.

Our story begins with Elsword, a young boy continuing his knight training in the village of Ruben. He discovers the great, blue demon Berthe trying to take away the El Shard in Ruben, which is vital in maintaining life for the village and the surrounding forest. Elsword unleashes his anger and manages to force Berthe to retreat, with the help of the wandering magician, Aisha, who happened upon the battle. Meanwhile, the elven ranger Rena overhears a group of bandits also planning to steal Ruben's El Shard. She engages the leader, Banthus, but he is able to escape with the El Shard. Rena, Elsword, and Aisha resolve to work together to retrieve the stolen El Shard from Banthus and the bandits, thus forming the El Search Party. This would begin their adventure as the members of the El Search Party travel across the continent to track down the El, make new allies and friends, stop powerful and cunning foes, solve the mysteries surrounding the El and the El Lady, and protect Elrios from the growing evil that threatens to destroy it.

Gameplay

Players can choose to play as one of twelve playable characters, each with their own unique characteristics, abilities, and backstories. Players will traverse through diverse areas and villages, where they can talk to NPCs and accept quests or access the game's various shops and facilities. Players can venture into dungeons and fields, where they can defeat enemies and tough bosses using attack commands and special skills to string together powerful combos. Doing so will allow players to complete Epic Quests, which unfold the story though dialogue cutscenes and sometimes rendered videos. Defeating monsters and completing quests can reward items, equipment, and ED, the main in-game currency. ED can be used to purchase various items, equipment, and services. The game servers also generally have limited-time in-game events that players can participate in to earn special rewards and benefits. Players can choose to use real cash currency to purchase exclusive goods from the Item Mall. Some of the main types of items available in the Item Mall are costume pieces and customizations, which can be purchased to dress up and customize characters to make them personalized.

Players earn experience from defeating enemies, clearing dungeons, and completing quests to level up and advance their characters. Upon reaching level 15, players can upgrade their character along a specialized job path, each with their own fighting style and personality, which gives access to new skills and abilities. The player is then able to advance their characters further at level 35 and unlock more powers for their class with the Transcendence system at level 70. The final advancement sits at the current level cap of level 99, unlocking the Force Skill system and more abilities.

Upon reaching the level cap of 99 and completing a certain quest, players can continue to earn experience to earn points in the El Resonance system, which can be invested in various stat increases to specialize characters and make them even stronger.

Players can collect and use a variety of items found throughout their journey. Quests can reward items upon completions, and NPCs can sell some items to players. Dungeons and bosses can drop rare equipment and items as well. Equipment can be dismantled into materials, which can be used to craft even stronger equipment. Equipment can also be enhanced at blacksmiths to power up its main stats, socketed to give additional stats, or attributed at an alchemist to gain additional elemental effects. Special dungeons available at higher levels drop special materials and equipment that is needed to craft the strongest, endgame equipment. Other items such as consumables and elixirs can be crafted as well. Players can also own pet companions who can accompany them on their journey, as well as mounts to provide swift transportation.

Players can interact with each other by communicating via the chat window, forming parties either manually or through matchmaking, playing in the fields or dungeons together (PvE), sparring or dueling in player versus player (PvP) matches, becoming part of a guild, trading with one another and selling items on the market board, and combining forces to tackle giant Raid Bosses.

His meeting with the party helped him remember that he wanted to protect those he holds dear. He then joins the party to find the missing El in hopes of enforcing justice and clearing his sins. Raven wields a blade to attack with quick slashes and thrusts, while his Nasod arm is capable of heavy scratches, hard punches, and even explosive firepower. Raven begins his adventure with a powerful blast from his Nasod Arm and the ability to slide into the shadows to pass through obstacles and enemies unharmed . After war broke out between humans and Nasods for the power of El back in ancient times, Eve had to go into hibernation, becoming the last of the ancient Nasod race. Eve awoke from her preservation capsule after an El fragment flew into it, and she learned the current state of her race. In order to revive her race, she reprogrammed her capsule to power Altera Core and revive the King Nasod, which were programmed to collect El energy, research the new era, and create new Nasods. Intelligent but alone, the Little Queen of the Nasods went back into hibernation to energize the Core, hoping to awaken to the reborn Nasod race. Eve awakened years later as a result of the defeat of King Nasod, who had become corrupted along with his creations and continued the ancient war against humans. The El Search Party stopped King Nasod's reign in order to take back Ruben's El, which Raven had delivered to Altera Core. With all her efforts in vain, Eve was once again alone in the present time. However, a red-haired boy offered to be her friend. Eve, with renewed hope, joins her new friend and the El Search Party to face a new demonic threat and revive her race. Eve commands her drones to aid in her gliding mobility and hit enemies so she does not have to lay a hand on them. She will, however, slap someone who truly angers her. She can also fire electron balls from a range to electrify foes. As the Nasod Queen, Eve also summons a variety of units or weaponry to deal with those who oppose her. Eve begins her adventure with her trusty Sentry Nasod and the ability to create a copy of herself to evade and trick enemies . Chung learned the sad fate of his father, Helputt, who became possessed by the demons while trying to protect Hamel. Chung chose to confront his father in an attempt to save him and defend Hamel from the advancing demonic forces, but Chung was no match for the mighty colossus. Fortunately, Elsword and the El Search Party had arrived and helped Chung escape from the battlefield. Once his injuries recovered, Chung joins the party in its quest to stop the demon invasion of Hamel so he can become strong enough to save his father and take back the Water El from the demons. Chung has the strength to skillfully wield his heavy Destroyer, using it for both as a melee weapon to smash enemies and a cannonball launcher to blow up foes. His Freiturnier body armor allows him to withstand many blows and enter Berserk Mode to unleash his full power. Chung begins his adventure with a single homing missile and a maneuver that propels himself out of harms way with a blast from his cannon . After Ran escapes from the confrontation, Ara joins the party so that, together, they may stop the demons, and her brother. Ara's spearmanship allows her to attack swiftly with a long melee range. Her connection the Millennium Fox grants her the ability to absorb Spirit Energy, which is used to perform powerful spirit arts. She also boasts high mobility with quick movements and air-running. Ara begins her adventure with a quick flurry of spear strikes and the ability to absorb spirit energy from her foes . Elesis, with her zealous nature, is able to mentor her brother and use her fearsome skills to lead her comrades to victory. Elesis peacefully spent her days training with her brother, that is until an unexpected visitor arrived. On that fateful day, Elesis is challenged by the Demon General Scar. In order to protect her brother, she accepted. The battle was fierce, and Scar was almost able to end it until Elsword gave Elesis the opening she needed to land a critical blow. Scar retreated, swearing that he would end her life the next time they meet as he teleported away. Elesis sensed that her encounter was a sign of imminent danger to Elrios, so she left home once more so she may keep her brother and her homeland safe from the impending demon invasion. Her mission brings her to the kingdom of Velder, where she leads the Velder Knights against the demon aggressors. When Elsword and his companions arrive at the Burning Hope Bridge, Elesis rescues her brother from meeting his end. She then joins the El Search Party in its fight against the demons. Elesis is quite adept at close-quarter combat with her agile swordplay and defense. Her ability to use fire magic enhances her offense to turn the tides of battle. Her strong and fast attacks along with defensive maneuvers allow her to control the battlefield. Elesis begins her adventure with the Velder Knight's signature explosive slash and a display of quick wits and speed to be both offensive and evasive simultaneously . Add escaped his enslavement, only to be isolated for years in an ancient library of vast knowledge. Scarred by his troubled past, Add uses his intelligence to ruthlessly pursue his goals. Add's time in the ancient library had transported him from the past to present-day Elrios. He learned only a few traces of the Nasod remain in this time, but he needed to seek them out if he ever wanted to return back to his own time. With the help of Wally, the lord of Elder, and his research, Add discovered information on Altera and the Nasod Queen, Eve. He embarked on his quest to track Eve down in order to learn what makes such a highly sophisticated Nasod tick. Add ends up tracking her in the company of the El Search Party at the Ancient Waterway. There, after defending Eve from a surprise attack, Add lends his genius to the El Search Party. Add dominates battles with his Dynamos, giving his melee attacks extended range with their electric shocks and creating explosive attacks with large areas of effect. He will also gain the ability to close in on a target instantly with his Nasod Armor. This makes him very versatile with close and long range attacks. His Dynamos also help his air mobility. Add begins his adventure being able to create a large sonic boom to destroy anything in its path and carrying around a small pocket teleporter . Betrayed by her aid, Lu had her powers sealed and her authority usurped. With what little power she had left, she escaped to Elrios with her body like that of a child. Ciel came across the injured Lu and decided to take her in, whether it was because of his sympathetic heart or his fondness for things small and cute. Despite her appearance, Lu acts aristocratically and is very demanding, though she still has quite the sweet tooth. Ciel is serious and reliable with his service; with his cooking knowledge and skills, he is often seen as like a butler. Lu and Ciel start their adventure being able to quickly swap between each other in combat, with Ciel's gunplay and Lu's massive physical strength . They are both capable of doing a slightly more powerful variant of their basic attacks as well . • The game originally featured the ability to charge MP up to a certain amount to trigger specific tier skills, much like in Grand Chase. The skill tiers that still exist today are a remnant of said feature, as it was replaced with Mana Break instead.
• Starting with Add, trailers for new characters have been primarily animated rather than CG.
• The original mascot for the game was the Phoru enemy present early in the game. They have been overshadowed by the Baby Hedgehog pet in recent days however.
• While the game features a fully original Soundtrack up to and including Lanox, any music past that point is instead licensed stock music, potentially as a means to reduce production costs.
