Chapter 41-1: As a Friend

Rena wakes up, but wonder about her own condition due to having stayed in the Demon Realm for far enough, although Ventus doesn't want her to go due to worrying. They decide to spar together, and Rena reveals her feeling, including not being sure if her close friend, Lua, is really gone or not. Lincy reveals to Rena that she saw an elf, and she thought it looked like her, but it wasn't her, and it was not a dark elf. They get scolded after exiting the sanctum.

Description

Rena soon regains consciousness due to Darkmoon's healing abilities, but soon wonders about her conditon.

Quest Acceptance Dialogue
  • Rena: Thank you, Darkmoon. I feel much better now.
  • Darkmoon: I'm glad you were able to recover so quickly. Is it because you're an elf?
  • Rena: Haha. Not exactly. I think I was just exhausted.
  • Anduran: We were worried when the portal closed before you were able to reach us. I'm so glad you're all safe!
  • Rena: We were worried something bad might happen to the El. We were relieved to find that it's safe and sound. Huhu, maybe that's how I recovered so quickly?
  • Anduran: Oh! I should let you rest. You're still sick!
  • Rena: I'm all better now. I can run around outside to prove it, if you'd like?
  • Anduran: Don't be silly! You should rest some more! You may be healed, but your body is still recovering.
  • Darkmoon: Here, let me get you a cover. Make sure you rest today, ok?
  • Rena: Alright. Thank you everyone.
  • Darkmoon: Now then...

  • Rena: (Hm... Strange. Why was I so exhausted earlier? I seem to be recovering just fine. It happened so suddently that I didn't notice, but it was definitely different from any other time. I thought it was because of the Demon Realm, but... Is there something I'm missing?)
  • Ventus: Hey there, sleeping beauty, why the long face?
  • Rena: Kyaaa?!
  • Ventus: Careful now!
  • Rena: By the El! Ventus?
  • Ventus: Hahaha, looks like you're all recovered now! Your pillow throwing skill was top notch!
  • Lincy: Soren! It's your fault she's all rattled! Rena, how are you feeling?
  • Rena: Ahaha... Hello, Lincy. It's been a while. I'm perfectly fine! My injuries weren't that serious in the first place. Anyway, I'm glad you're here. I was wondering what was happening while I was getting treated. Can you tell me what everyone else is up to?
  • Ventus: Everyone looks pretty busy. They each had a hold of an El Master trying to figure out something. I, for one, was with Rose trying to contact the Demon Realm.
  • Rena: Contact... the Demon Realm? Did you succeed?
  • Ventus: Mm... We did hear something that was almost like a riddle. They're probably still trying to make sense of it right now.
  • Rena: A riddle...? I'm not sure I understand, but I hope it works out in the end. Maybe I could hae helped out if I recovered sooner.
  • Lincy: ... Rena. Did something happen in the Demon Realm? Losing consciousness suddenly? Or hearing a strange voice?
  • Rena: Not really. I was tired though. Why do you ask?
  • Lincy: Um... Rena... Do you really have to go back to the Demon Realm?
  • Rena: Lincy? What do you mean?
  • Lincy: Elves are more easily affected by demonic energy. Your sudden exhaustion might be because of that. Soren said he felt something similar when he was in the Demon Realm, too. That he felt strange...
  • Rena: Lincy, there are elves in the Demon Realm as well. As an elf from Elrios, I was taught that they were cursed. But when I actually met them, they looked fine. Even if they live in the Demon Realm, they're still elves. If demonic energy does affect elves, then I think I should be able to endure it just like they have.
  • Lincy: That's different! The dark elves have transformed before they went to the Demon Realm. They weren't thrown in to the Demon Realm without El's blessing like you!
  • Ventus: Lincy, I know you're worried, but maybe you shouldn't have just blurted out like that...
  • Lincy: ... I know I can't just stop Rena from going to the Demon Realm. So just think of it as a request. From a friend...
  • Rena: A request from a friend...
  • Ventus: Rena, I know it's sudden, but please understand. Lincy was worried every since she knew you were headed to the Demon Realm. It's true that the demonic energy is hard to resist unless you have Master-level control of the El. It won't be long before you're corrupted.
  • Rena: Corrupted...? What do you mean?
  • Lincy: ... Just as it sounds like. Rena, why do you think dark elves exist?
  • Rena: Huh? What do you mean?
  • Lincy: Why aren't there any dark dwarves? Or dark Elriands? They can turn into demons, but why is there a specific term for elves that are demonized? That's because elves are more heavily influenced by demonic energy. That goes for you too. Elves would lose their minds even with the amount manageable by other races.
  • Rena: Lincy...
  • Lincy: Do you understand? That's what it means for an elf to go outside the influence of the El. There El that protected you here, is useless in the Demon Realm. The reason wy we tracked you down in the Demon Realm was to give you the spirit stone... But also because I was worried about your condition. Thankfully nothing happened this time... But you might not always be that lucky.
  • Rena: ... I see. Thank you for your concern. But, I still need to go to the Demon Realm.
  • Lincy: Rena...!
  • Rena: I'll prove it to you. Though I may not be as powerful as an El Master, I've never had any difficulties facing against demons that invaded Elrios. Even the exhaustion I feel now, might have nothing to do with the demonic energy.
  • Ventus: ....... Then how's this? If yo can face me for 1 hour with no problem, we won't stop you from going.
  • Lincy: You too, Soren?!
  • Rena: Lincy, I don't want to be corrupted by demonic energy. And I understand that the Demon Realm is dangerous enough to make you two worried. But I still have to go. So let me persuade you.

  • Rena: This is... an Elriabrunnr. Ventus, is there a reason why we've used such a roundabout way to get here?
  • Ventus: Because we can't let the priestesses know we're here! If they saw you walking around instead of resting, they'll have my head!
  • Rena: Oof... You're right. Darkmoon and Anduran both insisted I rest. Oh well, we're already here. Maybe we can sneak back before they notice?
  • Ventus: That's the spirit! As long as we're not caught, it's like it never happened!
  • Rena: I'm not sure if I can condone YOU saying that.
  • Ventus:' Now Rena, are you ready?
  • Rena: Huhu, yes, I'm ready!
  • Ventus: Hm... But before we start, let me get this straight. If you win, I won't say anything about you going to the Demon Realm.

  • Ventus: My, you seem even more enthusiastic about saving the world than I am, and I'm the El Master.
  • Rena: Why, of course! It's only for the good of Elrios! My first mission was to investigate why the connection t the Spirit Realm was weakened... I never thought that journey would take me this far. As I traveled, I met new friends, and realized what a small world I lived in. Sometimes, it feels like I was destined to be on this journey. If I stayed in Eldemyr... I don't think I could have even imagined myself, stopping an unknown organization from taking the El, or saving the world!
  • Ventus: Haha. I also think your actions are admirabole. You're like a hero to the elves and the spirits!
  • Rena: Ahaha... I won't say I'm a hero! But... Your words still make me happy.
  • Lincy: Rena... You don't have to go to the Demon Realm to become a hero. You're already a hero for us, the elves and the spirits.
  • Rena: Lincy...
  • Lincy: I'm sorry, I keep trying to stop you, but I'm so worried. It seems to me that the destiny that led you here, is now leading you to your doom. I'm sure you already know... But the spirits of the Demon Realm will be hostile to those from Elrios.
  • Rena: Yes, I know.
  • Lincy: ... Aren't you scared?

  • Rena: It's the same for me too. I... lost a friend because of something I've done.

  • Rena: I don't anymore... But I used to have nightmares. In my dream, Lua was always being chased by a monster. And I was always just watching Lua and the spirits that are losing power, unable to do anything. The nightmare terrified me so much... that I used to wish my memories of Lua would just disappear.
  • Lincy: (Rena... Was that why you didn't want to borrow the power of the spirits back then?)
  • Rena: But... I started to hate myself more, for not being able to do anything when Lua was in danger.
  • Lincy: Were you able to overcome your nightmare?
  • Rena: Um... No. The nightmare always changed. No matter what I tried, I would always fail to save her. Sometimes, Lua won't even get a chance to scream. The next, she would curse me till her dying breath. The next, she would call out to me... But it would all end the same way. I don't even remember how she actually died. I do know she was my friend, that she's no longer here, and that I've spent a long time all by myself.
  • Ventus: ... Survivor's guilt?
  • Rena: Lua wanted to leave the forest one day and travel the world. She wanted to meet new people and become friends with those who are different form us. But... She can never fulfill those dreams... unlike me... So, I always thought I had to stay enclosed from the world and live the rest of my life mourning her death. I thought that might be less painful for me as well.
  • Ventus: ... We're not used to sudden goodbyes unlike other races without long lives.
  • Lincy: The more we spend time together, the more we expect to spend time together, the more hurt we are by the sudden farewell.
  • Rena: ... As I mourned for her... I had a sudden revelation. If I'm not going to do anything, why am I alive instead of Lua? Memories are not forever, and even elves must die in the end. Then... what can I do to make my life more meaningful? ... And this is the answer I found. It was Lua's dream to go on an adventure. Now, it's my dream too. To leave the forest and travel the world... To meet new people and become friends with those who are different from us. When I meet her again, years from now, I want to have many adventures so I can share my memories with her. So... I was really happy you called me a hero. Because that was one of her dreams as well!
  • Lincy:' Rena...
  • Rena: Meeting the El Search Party, and meeting you two... None of this would have happened if I didn't make the decision to leave the forest. That's what I mean by destiny. Even though she left me side... Like the wind that's always with me, I can always feel her, even when I don't see her. Sorry. Was that too much? But that's how I feel.   • Lincy: What? Before you went to the Demon Realm?
  • Rena: Yup. I had similar experience in Feita. I lost consciousness while saying weird things. I definitely remember. Someone was whispering, so I listened in... But then, I lost consciousness and couldn't remember anything. So I just ignored anything that sounded similar after that. I no longer hear it anymore, so I forgot all about it... But is this what you were talking about, Lincy?
  • Lincy: Yes...! You purposefully ignored it? It should be really difficult to do so...
  • Ventus: But you fought with demons from Feita, right? Maybe you learned how to resist demonic energy along the way.
  • Rena: Then, do you think I'll be ok in the Demon Realm as well?
  • Ventus: If you stay strong, you should be ok. But better safe than sorry. You should stay with your friends at all times. Since they use the power of El, you should be safe with them.
