[Interview] ‘Elsword’ Kwon Oh Dang director “The reason we made LuCiel..”

December 6th, 2014 | Posted by 2nafishisgood in Interviews | Korean Elsword Updates

Translation From the Game Pokers Interview: Original Link

Elsword’s Kwon Oh Dang director promised his users a new type of experience after showcasing the concept of the new ‘Duo Character’. Duo character is a character that’s played by exchanging between two characters of completely different play styles.

Kwon director showcased the new character ‘Lu,Ciel’  during the ‘Elsword: Hero’s Tournament Season 3’ which was held in the Nexon Arena on 12/06.  Elsword is a popular MORPG  developed by KOG and published by Nexon. Director Kwon is KOG’s head of development for Elsword.

This new character is Elsword’s first duo character and is divided into Lu and Ciel. Players can exchange freely between Lu the female character, and Ciel the male character during gameplay.

Kwon Oh Dang director explained the reasoning behind making a duo character instead of making two separate characters as follows: “We always made each character with different battle styles. We had lots of trouble thinking up a new character because if we tried to give the character one advantage, it always ended up having some kind of disadvantage”

“Thus we thought, what if we tie in two characters with different advantages into one character so they can cover each other’s disadvantages? This was the thought that got us started on Lu,Ciel.”

Users can play as either Lu or Ciel in both towns and dungeons, and change between them whenever they want. Depending on the user’s preference, it is even possible to play only as Lu or Ciel all the way until the end,  but it will be more fun and effective to change between characters depending on the situation. Kwon Oh Dang director said “We didn’t put a cooldown into the exchange mechanism. You battle as whoever you want at any time. And its designed so it’s possible to get both characters to fight together if you gather enough resources,

Lu and Ciel shares equipment but have different avatars. Kwon director said “continuing from the Pair character Elesis, we showcased a Duo character Lu,Ciel” and “We just thought duo character would be the most fitting release for this winter and there are no further plans for any more duo characters.”

He also said “We need to find something new to update after this” and emphasized again that “If users want to see more duo characters, we will comply but currently we don’t have plans for more.”

Elsword Winter updates starts in upcoming 11th of December and the new character Lu,Ciel will be updated on the 18th. Today’s event only showcased Ciel’s appearance but Lu’s appearance will be revealed on the 11th when the winter update starts.

    Another PvP killer then…

^_^ followed by a quickie nerf.

    • lesstea says:

Don’t worry. They LOVE to nerf OP chara. :)

    • VoidGazer says:

And in the best/worst scenario, the separation of the character in two

      • Alexias says:

Still, you guys gotta admit, this is completely unexpected and unheard of.(Unless you count the tag-team mode in GC) How genius of KOG. Now, how is the skill build of this guys gonna be then? And what’s the button for switching?(Most likely the V button also used for memorize.) AND HOW IN THE WORLD IS THE JOB CHANGING EVEN GONNA BE?!(Either a single unified class advancement or a you need to advance each character separately. And if it’s the latter, then think of the possible combination of classes. That’s too OP in my opinion. Oh well, we just have to wait for it.)

        • Endgame says:

          Yes. How genius of KOG…..

…..To rip off Maple Story. Yet again. As they have been. (Fields, Potential, Professions, etc.)

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yb9c1GCl6HY

          • ShadowKazuni says:

Fields and professions are kind of typical nowadays in an MMORPG, aren’t they?

          • Endgame says:

Not really. Most newer stage based kMMOs DON’T have fields. Let alone mounts to go alongside them.

And then there’s the fact that Elsword’s fields are EXACTLY like Maple Story’s. Right down to the KS wars and being empty except for a select few maps due to superior leveling methods.

          • zetgeist says:

            >implying that such a thing doesn’t happen in every game with shared spaces
            oh you.

          • Endgame says:

Oh believe me. Maple Story KS wars are so much more brutal than in other games. I even had my Luminous in Pantheon so he could teleport to wherever my Link Skill mule was leveling just to be ready.

And Elsword….. does not let you change channels or anything of the sort to try to find an empty map, and has skills like Shooting Star that make the whole thing all the more poorly thought out. (Have they considered bots at all?!)

  • coca cola says:

I want the little loli demon only! I think its better if the first class will be the duo. the second will be ciel died and the loli demon only then the third will the ciel guy only.

  • Deo says:

Beware of strong characters hahaha. Still, waiting for this one ^_^

  • Milk says:

They really to need to stop making these dar scheme characters bits annoying.

Make a happy character with light background.

    Not some demon op shit.

These are the idiots behind the our game.

    • Endgame says:

I think it became apparent that KOG was creatively bankrupt as soon as they actually released Elesis as a playable character…..

Remember the part where all of her base and 1st Job key inputs are exactly the same as her Elbrat equivalent classes?

But oh yes. We definitely need less darkness themed classes. (Or classes that look darkness themed even if they technically aren’t like DIABOLIC Esper.) I mean, they’re fighting AGAINST the demons. Where’s our god damned Paladins/Crusaders?

And less sword users. DEFINITELY less sword users. Counting NW, this makes FIVE ****ING SWORD USERS. And if you want to count Code Empress on account of Oberon using a sword as well…..

Asking for a character with a happier background is a bit much to ask for. This IS a story about war afterall. Plus, ElType has been degraded to pure gag comics and no more story centric ones. (But I suppose it’s for the best. They keep on retconning them anyway. Ara joined after Hamel and neither Elesis or Add were there…..)

  • Endgame says:

“We always made each character with different battle styles. We had lots of trouble thinking up a new character because if we tried to give the character one advantage, it always ended up having some kind of disadvantage”

OF COURSE the ****ing braindead morons who designed Elesis (Crimson Avenger! If she catches you, she kills you. If you catch her….. she kills you!) think this way.

Characters having different sets of strengths and weaknesses that prevent them from rendering other classes obsolete? **** that! LET’S DESIGN A PERFECT CHARACTER WHO MAKES EVERYONE OBSOLETE!…..

…..Except Elesis, of course. Can’t have KOG’s favorite child get upstaged in her own second game, now can we?

“We didn’t put a cooldown into the exchange mechanism. You battle as whoever you want at any time.”

How wonderful. This isn’t going to be completely overpowered at all!

Ooh! Ooh! And give them seperate HP and MP pools too! And let the inactive character recover HP and MP while s/he’s not being used! What could POSSIBLY go wrong?!

…..I seriously hope the koreans are ready to jump this sinking ship of a game and make a mass exodus to CloserS. You know. The game the people who made Elsword good in the first place left KOG after they had enough of their executive meddling bullshit to make.

    • ShadowKazuni says:

Somehow I don’t think you’re quite understanding where they’re going with this.

“We always made each character with different battle styles. We had lots of trouble thinking up a new character because if we tried to give the character one advantage, it always ended up having some kind of disadvantage”

This means that both of the characters by themselves are going to be pretty weak, and you’re supposed to focus on having them work together.

“We didn’t put a cooldown into the exchange mechanism. You battle as whoever you want at any time.”

Use your brain for this one, while you do get to switch, did they mention how long it takes? You don’t know that. Hell, maybe it takes just a bit for you to switch until suddenly someone hits you during the switch and you’re stuck in a good combo string, hm?

That, and somewhere along the way they mentioned that both characters will share equipment, but they have their own stats as their own character when being used. Costumes aren’t shared, however, so if one has an IB… the other doesn’t. Only thing shared is the weapon.

      • L says:

In optimal conditions, yes, they would be balanced in a way they’re both weak individually but strong together.

In KOG conditions…welcome the new local OP character.

        Let’s go to Closers, guys.

      • Stalker-Chan says:

Knowing KoG they’ll probably make both characters imba like Ara, Elesis and Add. Why else would they mention having the choice of sticking with only one character throughout the entire game? Besides, sticking with only one char defeats the concept of a duo character. You shouldn’t not have to rely on both. If duo characters don’t fit your style then pick a different character.

      • Endgame says:

Do you seriously think the GENIUSES who came up with Crimson Avenger, the class that can, and I wish I was exaggerating, win by just standing there and using Stoic – Strong, are going to successfully balance out this mechanic?

And as already mentioned, they DID say they want both characters to be able to stand on their own…..

        • blank says:

well i can only think of one thing, this duo character is to cover up one another weakness, so that it can live up to its advantage [unless ppl goes on liek thsi char is blah blah blah that, then KOG might end up breaking this char too just like ADD] [ppl were saying add blah blah blah that, and then it broke now]
and when they makes this char broke, not just KOG 1st these ppl who likes make a char broke,

as for elesis, that was 1st wrong character they putted in this game, i wonder why, did they really wanted it, doesn’t matter how i see its just one wrong char that shouldn’t have come, and yea don’t sit, make you are wearing your seat belt [just like when riding a plane] more character will be coming after this one, its not the end

          • Endgame says:

Add was even more half-assed and uninspired than Elesis. (As was Asura for that matter. You can tell KOG REALLY didn’t care. They even reused the Nine-Tailed Fox mount model for Eun. But that should have been expected after the treatment they’ve been giving Ara.) Most of his 1st Job skills are even shared between all three paths.

KOG at least gave their favorite child new skill animations to better cover up how many of her skills were blatant rehashes of already existing ones. Complete with her skills that ARE directly stolen from Elbrat having even better animations. Stardust Shower just reuses Transformed Karis’ projectiles, doesn’t it?

And because of this recent trend, I am having SERIOUS doubts that Luciel is going to have any skills that are actually new. Especially considering how nothing about the concepts of Lu or Ciel isn’t regurgitated from the already existing characters.

Ciel was a black haired swordsman who was left for dead only to be saved in exchange for servitude? So was Raven. Ciel dual wields? So does Elbrat. Ciel made a pact with Lu? Ara made a similar pact with Eun. Ara’s original backstory also involved a battle with Karis. Turned into a demonic entity? Elesis does that too. (CA) Lu lost most of her powers? So did Aisha. Lu is a queen who’s lost her subjects? So is Eve. She uses a claw? Raven and Ara (Asura) have been using claws for some time now.

No directly ripping off Rena (Although she’s a sword user to an extent, which adds to the too many sword users narrative), Chung, or Add. Yet…..

    • Fariun says:

Even though the following sentence might offend you, I really hope it doesn’t, though it might… but let’s hope it doesn’t.

You really love complaining about everything, don’t you?

  • Auna says:

Damn you! Why no one of them think about the others characters? Like Elsword, Aisha, Rena and Raven? This are only a name at this rate. They need a revamp, restyle but no. Just add some new super pvp killer charcater. GG really.

    • Endgame says:

If you’re going to complain about older characters getting left in the dust in PVP (Which isn’t even necessarily true. VP was one of the absolute best classes until Season 3 gutted her gravity ball catches.), you might want to leave out Rena.

GA was always gimped in 1v1 by design. This is nothing new. But WS has been overpowered since day one and has only gotten BUFFS. She has high damage output, debuffs that kill Attack, can survive fatal attacks with 1 HP left and basically not die if she keeps on running, a defensive passive that provides tons of damage mitigation and resistances, and a god damned healing skill!

And NW….. can leave behind lots of traps and stand on top of them and charge mana. That’s pretty ****ing cheap.

      • zetgeist says:

“And NW….. can leave behind lots of traps and stand on top of them and charge mana. That’s pretty ****ing cheap.”

and how many characters are completely bereft of things that hit at a distance…? you wanna talk cheap, how about the whole “bunnyhopping Els doing ^z requires pinpoint timing or wide-hitboxed skills to knock out of it otherwise he bounces untouchable untill hitconfirm and then kills you in one combo” thing I remember seeing a lot, back when I still wasted my life touching the utter trash that is elsword PVP.

I always see you whine about rena. between not knowing how to play GA but insisting you do, ranting about how horrible WS is, and NW as well, I can’t help but think that maybe you just need to git gud, endypoo.

        • Alexias says:

It isn’t necessarily true that the older characters(Elsword, Aisha, Rena, and Raven) are left in the dust. Rena’s case was already explained.

Let’s start with Raven. Raven isn’t that easy to use. You need to know what skill to use, and when to use it, when to strike, and watch for your health if you’re playing as VC, and his burn debuffs hurt like hell. BM is one of the fastest class in-game.(he even has a passive to increase it further.) And dear god RF, especially someone with Piercing/Water 3, he hits like hell, adding to the fact that he has one charging skill that you can’t mana break on.

Now as for Aisha. Once you can use her correctly(bonus points if you can use Memorize correctly), she’s a force to be reckoned with. You can pretty much imagine just how powerful EM still is in PVP, even with all the nerfs she was given(added to the fact that her main form of attacking, XZZ, was giving a damage nerf and reduced knockdown rate but can gain more mana in exchange. We all know that an EM with full mana is dangerous.) Pretty self explanatory here actually.

As for VP, she is one of the hardest class to play correctly in-game, but once you get to play her correctly, she’s pretty easy to master.(ONCE you get to play her correctly, that is.) She was given nerfs, sure. She could make it up with having more skills she can easily memorize(Hell Drop and Hell Stone.) Her Shadow Body got nerf so you can’t use Z attacks while under its effects? Then let everyone hit you while charging(added to the fact that you’re in Stoic the whole duration.) while using Mana Shield, which offsets the damage. Then another that she has the highest possible mana in-game.(Limited Mana Management? bring it on. Just be sure to have high awk charge.)

And then there’s DW. She has a lot of skills that stun. She becomes stronger with more mana, has a good buff, and can absorb either your hp or mp. And once she’s inside Magical Makeup, you know you know you’re supposed to attack with caution. And even if you don’t, she can charge mana.

Now as for Elsword. He’s the most underrated character in this game even though he’s the titular character. It doesn’t mean that he has an Easy difficulty in using him makes him easy to master. In fact, he’s one of the hardest. Many just don’t realize that. You need to know how to use his Blue and Red Aura correctly. And using Iron Body at the correct time is crucial.(bonus points if it’s noted.) Also when playing him, be sure that you’re the one being chased, not the other way around. Use hit and run tactics when necessary. You need to use EVERY SINGLE ABILITY he has. If you have to run, then run. Who cares if the opponent berates you for it? You need to find some way to cover his weakness. This is especially true against LK, has limited ways to attack enemies from a distance. Oh and last thing, anticipate your opponent’s moves.

LK’s combos look easy, what now with his IP push added. But as easy as his combos are, you can easily predict what he’s gonna do. But he’s one of the toughest classes in-game, and can easily dish out powerful attacks in a few seconds once he caught you in his combo.

Now for RS. At first I thought that he’s easy to use. Well……..HE ISN’T. You just don’t spam >>ZZX, there’s more to that. >>ZZX spamming will get you killed if the opponent knows to backstep and wait for you stop in front of him. You also need to keep your opponent from knocking down. He’s had it harder in continuing a combo than LK. But he can catch his opponents easier with his ranged attacks. That and his buffs make him dangerous.

As for IS. He can move fast. Make use of it. Do not spam Sword Shield every single time. Your opponent will not come to you in that case. You need to know how and when to strike, where to strike, and get into an aura mode as quickly as possible. And try to keep your opponent from being knocked down. He’s the middle of both LK and RS if you noticed and the most fragile class of Elsword.

Oh and every class is powerful, some are just too difficult to use.

          • Endgame says:

            Yeah….. no.

First of all, Code Nemesis destroys your narrative that “every class is powerful”.

Second of all….. so does Dimension Witch. And I should know. I mained her, obtained REAPER on her, and attempted to use her to fight Elesis of all people. (Granted, I’ve won more than lost since most Elesis players don’t know how to really abuse her. But let’s just say the one GM with a +9 weapon I fought killed me in two combos.)

-DW lacks damage output. Energy Spurt is a hollow shell of its former self. (Not to mention the ST Revamp also nerfed its range.) Screw Driver – Driller is our main damage dealer, and that doesn’t even do that much and requires the opponent to be against a wall.

-Her catching game is pretty weak. Especially in lag. Past a certain point, no one’s going to fall for >>XX. Energy Drain’s lockon is pretty bad AND prone to lagging and not even registering on your opponent’s end. Plenty of things go through Distortion, etc.

-Magical Makeup. It is MUCH worse than you think it is. If you fail the free catch from activation, you’re pretty much screwed since the starballs move very slowly and kill their viability as a catching tool. AND everyone knows to run away from you.

And even when you do catch, all using starballs does is feed the opponent lots and lots of MP and Awakening Charge. Even with Reaper it’s not worth it. So you’re basically stuck just using ZZZ< as normal….. sure you get more MP, but to do what exactly? Not to mention lolElesis has a different knockback from everyone else that can cause her to even get pushed away from the starballs and escape…..

-Her stun skills? ST Revamp gutted Impact Hammer by nerfing its hitbox.

DW isn’t anywhere near as close as the threat she was before the ST Revamp.

          • Alexias says:

CN is powerful, it’s just that she’s so hard to use that no one even bothers learning how to use her. She has buffs for a purpose. As for DW, use her melee. She has a passive that increases her physical attack power that also affects her skills.(Manaflow Overdrive.) You need to maintain a reasonable amount of mana to keep her attacks strong. And oh, I really wonder why no one bothers using energetic body.(And don’t even get me started that Mana Shield is better at defense. We’re talking about increasing DW’s damage. It’s a necessary sacrifice.) Using both offsets her low offensive damage.

Both classes have a lot of buffs for a purpose.

  • RabidPringles says:

I see a lot of complaining but personally i think this looks interesting. I mean ive been waiting for more dual wield type things so Ciel is looking pretty sexy to me right now. Odds are I wont play Lu as much but still, the idea seems interesting.

  • nightmaster says:

Hopefully the skills will be original and not some copied slightly modified skill from some char.

    • Endgame says:

All of Asura, CA, and DE’s skills were blatantly stolen from someone else. Hell, with Asura, they literally just gave her VP’s Mana Steal and recolored it yellow.

Don’t get your hopes up….. for anything other than CloserS tearing Elsword limb from limb and putting KOG in their place.

  • daryl says:

sounds very cool but i dont want any more duo characters also how will costumes work haha

    • blank says:

i think you won’t need 2 sets of costume for this character, if my guess is right , then the costume will change it self when changing the character, thats how it might work for this char…but i don’t know

  • lilwolfgal says:

i like the idea of a duo character.
but at the same time, I’m not to sure about it. I think (personally) that since this is a duo chara, the character that is not being used should suffer at least half of the damage the active character is receiving, and gain half the mp the the active chara is gaining. or at least 1/3 of it :)
I look forward to seeing this character(s) in action, I recently saw ceil’s release video thing, they both seem to be melee and distant attackers, so ya, I guess it is alittle op , but range alone can make a character op, but aren’t all the charas we have thus far op in there own way? I think so. :)

    • MallePanda says:

Actually i think they got ciel from uno (gc) his double blade guns from IS an DC (elsword) also the child body is original also they seem to have upgraded CE oneron and op khelia summoning to switching out completely. You say they cant be original, but in reality they are mixing ideas from their own games and re-creating them. Also. His elven ears are probably from demonic influence. There is alot of argumenting if ciel is kirito for el a word. He us not. That title still belongs to IS. JS.

  • crest says:

they stole this character idea from maplestory Zero class…alpha and omega ….flipping KOG cant even come up with new character designs like wtf…..

  • DiabolicADD says:

Not obvious at all… Separate IBs… They smell a sinking ship…

  • blank says:

well i kinda like this idea from KOG’s/ director
but i didn’t like one think, it’s that if he is the KOG’s director then he must be the one that made my add broke.
he said ” “We always made each character with different battle styles. We had lots of trouble thinking up a new character because if we tried to give the character one advantage, it always ended up having some kind of disadvantage”” and then make it broken character LOL

  • kokiro says:

WHAT THE HELL IS ARA AND ELESIS’ WEAKNESS!?

    • Endgame says:

YR is too orb dependant, and they just gutted Ara’s ^X combo. The braindead decision to remove Special Active screen freezes in PVE also screwed Ara over.

Elesis however….. has no weakness whatsoever. Nor will they ever give her one. She is KOG’s favorite child and they WANT her on top. Whenever they do “nerf” her, they only make her stronger in the process.

      • UNub says:

After the frequent buffs they left behind on YR, she’s actually coming back up in usage.

But you wouldn’t know that. You’re going off of theories for a game you don’t even play anymore.

  • Enough says:

    This?

“We always made each character with different battle styles. We had lots of trouble thinking up a new character because if we tried to give the character one advantage, it always ended up having some kind of disadvantage”

“Thus we thought, what if we tie in two characters with different advantages into one character so they can cover each other’s disadvantages?

    2 Words KOG. FUCK YOU.

  • Existence says:

I like this idea. Hope it goes well.

  • MallePanda says:

Am still waiting on my angelic hammer user. And my male magi user. They literally skipped everyone in GC and went straight to Uno(Ciel) and that claw bitch, damb forgot her name. (Lu)

    • Endgame says:

As much as I hate everything about Lu and Ciel, I DO find it pretty funny that you said this only for Lu to be revealed to be copying Lime’s design the next day…..

  • HyperGamer says:

You know instead of flooding this chat with your whiny bs you could find a new game if you dont like what the maker does with his game so what nothing in this world is perfect so for heavens sake either play the game or quit whining already
