While the Sword Gust does not inflict hitstun, it will generate MP and charge the Awakening gauge for both the target and yourself. However, the amount of MP that you receive is very low (less than 1 MP per hit).
Your combos do not have to hit a target to summon Sword Gust.
Each Sword Gust will cancel the delay of your command attack, therefore speeding up your rate of attack.
As Sword Gusts count as commands, their damage can be increased with Command Damage Increase effects.
