Elsword (Korean: 엘소드 Elsword) is a free-to-play, action-oriented massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by KOG Studios. The game was first released at the end of 2007 in South Korea, and later it was localized and made available to play in other regions. This game was originally developed as a spiritual successor to KOG Studios' other game, Grand Chase, specifically evolving the graphics from 2D. This MMORPG boasts a 2.5D side-scrolling gameplay with beat'em up combat, manga-inspired visuals, and an immersive fantasy world. The story of the game follows the title protagonist Elsword and the El Search Party as they travel across the world of Elrios to fight against the encroaching demonic forces and protect the El from those who seek to abuse its power.

Story

In the land of Elrios, the world is given life thanks to the power of the El. However, the harmony of Elrios was disrupted by one of the guardians of the El, Solace, kidnapping the El Lady, the chosen of the goddess Ishmael. This caused the El to become unstable and explode, existing as numerous crystal shards of energy scattered across the land in the present. The larger shards hold great power, enough to sustain the nature and civilization around it. Unfortunately, there are some wicked beings who seek the power of the El for their own.

Elsword, continuing his knight training in the village of Ruben, discovers the blue demon Berthe trying to take away the El Shard, an important treasure of Ruben Village that maintains the life for it and the surrounding forest. Elsword unleashes his anger and manages to force Berthe to retreat, with the help of the magician, Aisha, who happened upon the battle. Meanwhile, Rena overhears a group of bandits planning to steal the El Shard for themselves. She engages the leader, Banthus, and forces him to flee. Berthe had threw away the El Shard in his escape, and it ends up landing right in front of Banthus. With the prize in his possession, Banthus runs off with the El Shard with a taunting laugh. Rena, Elsword, and Aisha decide to work together to retrieve the lost El from Banthus and the bandits, thus forming the El Search Party. This would begin their adventure as the members of the El Search Party travel the world of Elrios to track down the El, make new allies and friends, stop powerful and cunning foes, solve the mysteries surrounding the El and the El Lady, and protect Elrios from the growing evil forces who threaten to destroy it.

Gameplay

Elsword's three first-job paths.

Players can choose to play as one of eleven playable characters, each with their own unique characteristics, abilities, and backstories. Players can traverse through town, where they can talk to NPCs and accept quests. Then players can enter dungeons and fields, where they can defeat enemies and tough bosses using basic attack commands and special skills to string together powerful combos. Doing so will allow players to complete quests, which unfold the story though dialogue cutscenes and sometimes rendered videos. Defeating monsters and completing quests rewards ED, the main in-game currency, which can be used to purchase various items, equipment, and services. The game servers also generally have limited-time in-game events that players can participate in to earn special rewards and items. Players can choose to use real cash currency to purchase exclusive goods from the Item Mall. Some of the main types of items available in the Item Mall are Costume Pieces and Customizations, which can be purchased to dress up and customize your character to make them your own.

Players earn experience from dungeons, quests, and enemies to level up and advance their characters. Upon reaching level 15 and then level 35, players can upgrade their character along a specialized job path, each with their own fighting style and personality, which gives access to new skills and abilities. At level 40, characters can choose one of three professions, each with its own features to assist characters on their journey. Characters who have achieved their second job change and reached level 70 can pursue Transcendence, which unlocks even more new skills and passives. Characters who reached the level cap of 99 and completed a certain quest can continue to earn experience to earn points in the El Resonance system, which can be invested in various stat increases.

Players can collect and use a variety of items found throughout their journey. Quests can reward items upon completions, and NPCs can sell some items to players. Dungeons and bosses can drop rare equipment and items as well. Equipment can be dismantled into materials, which can be used to craft even stronger equipment. Equipment can also be enhanced at blacksmiths to power up its main stats, socketed to give additional stats, or attributed at an alchemist for additional elemental effects. Special dungeons available at higher levels drop special materials and equipment that is needed to craft the strongest, endgame equipment. Other items such as consumables and elixirs can be crafted as well.

Players can interact with each other by communicating via the chat window, forming parties either manually or through matchmaking, playing in the fields or dungeons together (PvE), sparring or dueling in player versus player (PvP) matches, becoming part of a guild, trading with one another and selling items on the market board, and combining forces to tackle giant Raid Bosses.

He is an aspiring young knight who was trained under the guidance of his sister, Elesis. Ambitious and hotheaded, Elsword is always looking for a challenge, but he is good-natured at heart. Elsword begins his journey searching for the lost El that was stolen from the town of Ruben, joining forces with Aisha and Rena. His strength lies in his close-ranged skill with the sword, but he can also harness the power of fire to deal some explosive attacks. He can take a number of hits and strike right back. Job Classes A knight trained to fight with an enhanced dashing, close-combat sword fighting style. Sword Knight Lord Knight Lord Knight (Transcendence) A fiery magic swordsman who utilizes both the sword and rune magic. Magic Knight Rune Slayer Rune Slayer (Transcendence) A dual-wielding swordsman with high-speed, sword combination attacks. Sheath Knight Infinity Sword Infinity Sword (Transcendence) Magician Aisha is a genius mage, well-versed in the art of magic. She had the misfortune of losing her magical powers by the effects of a cursed ring. Despite the loss, Aisha decided to embark on a journey to remaster her magic. She is intelligent, brash, and confident in her abilities with staff in hand. Aisha meets Elsword, who she finds quite obnoxious and often gets into arguments with, and Rena in Ruben. She joins them on their quest to find the lost El while she hones her magical powers. She specializes in overwhelming her opponents with fireballs and wide array of powerful spells in quick succession, and she can give a quick whack with her staff to fend of anyone too close to her mana-charging space. Job Classes A mage who uses long-range elemental magic to subdue enemies with explosive magical powers. High Magician Elemental Master Elemental Master (Transcendence) A mage who dominates enemies with the ability to use dark and destructive magical spells. Dark Magician Void Princess Void Princess (Transcendence) A magician that specializes in using short-ranged battle skills and has the ability to bend space to amplify her magical powers. Battle Magician Dimension Witch Dimension Witch (Transcendence) Ranger Rena is an elven marksman able to call forth the power of nature to her aid. She bears the duty to protect the El in order to maintain the stability of the world and the ties between Elrios and the Elven plane. She is usually calm and collected, and she's known to act motherly to the team. Rena's journey begins in Ruben, where she learns of Banthus's plot to steal the El, and she enlists the help of Elsword and Aisha to track him and the El down. Rena can fire magic arrows to shoot down enemies, as well as deliver fierce kicks in close-combat. She is also capable of graceful movements and calling on nature to enhance her abilities. Combat Ranger Wind Sneaker Wind Sneaker (Transcendence) An archer specially trained to use her long bow and arrow attacks with the ability to weaken and expose enemies with her shots. Sniping Ranger Grand Archer Grand Archer (Transcendence) A ranger with a strategic battle style that consists of trapping enemies within a wide attack range and swift movements. Trapping Ranger Night Watcher Night Watcher (Transcendence) Taker Raven is a mercenary reborn with a Nasod arm to battle alongside his blade. Once the proud captain of the Crow Mercenary Knights of Velder, Raven was betrayed by his friend and lost his comrades and his fiancée. On the verge of death, Raven accepted a deal that a Nasod who found him had presented him: to be reborn with the power to enact his revenge on those who had took everything from him. Raven was filled with fury and rage, that is until Elsword and the El Search Party fought him aboard the Black Crow to stop his rebel group from terrorizing the Ponggo and take back the El that Raven took from Wally. His meeting with the party helped him remember that he wanted to protect those he holds dear. He then joins the party to find the missing El in hopes of enforcing justice and clearing his sins. Raven wields a blade to attack with quick slashes and thrusts, while his Nasod arm is capable of heavy scratches, hard punches, and even explosive firepower. Job Classes A swordsman specializing in unique, fast sword skills which displays an afterimage of him after striking with immense speed. Sword Taker Blade Master Blade Master (Transcendence) A mercenary of rage specially equipped with a Nasod arm to destroy enemies with a rapid succession of blazing hits. Over Taker Reckless Fist Reckless Fist (Transcendence) A veteran mercenary who maximizes his destructive power with Overheating to ignite complex attacks using a medium-range fighting style with ballistic firepower. Weapon Taker Veteran Commander Veteran Commander (Transcendence) Another Code Eve is the ancient queen of the Nasod race and fights with her two trusty drones, Moby and Remy. After war broke out between humans and Nasods for the power of El back in ancient times, Eve had to go into hibernation, becoming the last of the ancient Nasod race. Eve awoke from her preservation capsule after an El fragment flew into it, and she learned the current state of her race. In order to revive her race, she reprogrammed her capsule to power Altera Core and revive the King Nasod, which were programmed to collect El energy, research the new era, and create new Nasods. Intelligent but alone, the Little Queen of the Nasods went back into hibernation to energize the Core, hoping to awaken to the reborn Nasod race. Eve awakened years later as a result of the defeat of King Nasod, who had become corrupted along with his creations and continued the ancient war against humans. The El Search Party stopped King Nasod's reign in order to take back Ruben's El, which Raven had delivered to Altera Core. With all her efforts in vain, Eve was once again alone in the present time. However, a red-haired boy offered to be her friend. Eve, with renewed hope, joins her new friend and the El Search Party to face a new demonic threat and revive her race. Eve commands her drones to aid in her gliding mobility and hit enemies so she does not have to lay a hand on them. She will, however, slap someone who truly angers her. She can also fire electron balls from a range to electrify foes. As the Nasod Queen, Eve also summons a variety of units or weaponry to deal with those who oppose her. Job Classes A destructive code with the Nasod's infinite attack power unlocked and the ability to summon deadly Nasod weapon for an all-out attack style. Code: Exotic Code: Nemesis Code: Nemesis (Transcendence) A summoner-type code that calls forth Nasod guardians to fight alongside her. Code: Architecture Code: Empress Code: Empress (Transcendence) An energetic code that shoots stronger electron beam and piercing lasers for long range attacks. Code: Electra Code: Battle Seraph Code: Battle Seraph (Transcendence) Guardian Chung is the White Wolf of Hamel who defends using a powerful cannon called the Destroyer. Chung trained in combat as part of the Seiker family who protects Hamel. Despite his young and delicate appearance, Chung has a brave heart and is willing to protect the innocent and those he holds dear. Chung learned the sad fate of his father, Helputt, who became possessed by the demons while trying to protect Hamel. Chung chose to confront his father in an attempt to save him and defend Hamel from the advancing demonic forces, but Chung was no match for the mighty colossus. Fortunately, Elsword and the El Search Party had arrived and helped Chung escape from the battlefield. Once he recovered from his injuries, Chung joined the party in its quest to stop the demon invasion of Hamel to become strong enough to save his father and take back the Water El from the demons. Chung has the strength to skillfully wield his heavy Destroyer, using it for both as a melee weapon to smash enemies and a cannonball launcher to blow up foes. His Freiturnier body armor allows him to withstand many blows and enter Berserk Mode to unleash his full power. Job Classes A sturdy guardian with enhanced defensive power and Heavystance makes him invulnerable to any attack on the battlefield. Fury Guardian Iron Paladin Iron Paladin (Transcendence) An offensive guardian who uses the Silver Shooters' fast magic bullets to enable quick, long range, shooting combination attacks. Shooting Guardian Deadly Chaser Deadly Chaser (Transcendence) A tactical guardian with a strategic battle style utilizing shelling artillery and bouncing grenades. Shelling Guardian Tactical Trooper Tactical Trooper (Transcendence) 小侠 (Little Xia) Ara is a spear-wielding martial artist from the land of Fahrmann. She trained tirelessly as a descendant of the 'Hann' family, who haven been the guardians of sacred animal spirits for generations. Young, brave, a bit clumsy, Ara is a kind-heart who will always do her best and protect her loved ones. One fateful night, demons invaded Ara's village. Despite her best effort, Ara could not defend the villagers from being felled by demons. As she tried to guard a sacred shrine, Ara fell into a secret altar as the floor beneath her collapsed. There, she discovered her brother Aren had been corrupted by the Dark El and led the invasion. She tried to talk to him, but the now demon general prepared to strike Ara down. However, the mystical fox spirit of the altar's hairpin artifact awakened to protect Ara. As Ran flees with an El fragment, Ara teams up with the fox spirit to embark on a journey to save her demon brother. Ara's spearmanship allows her to attack swiftly with a long melee range. Her connection the Millennium Fox grants her the ability to absorb Energy, which is used to perform powerful spirit arts. She also boasts high mobility with quick movements and air-running. Job Classes A specially-trained martial artist who uses swifter and faster spear arts. Little Hsien Sakra Devanam Sakra Devanam (Transcendence) A martial artist trained to use the flow of energy for dark energy spear skills in medium-range combat. Little Devil Yama Raja Yama Raja (Transcendence) A martial artist specialized in elusive shadow techniques borrowed from the Millennium Fox Eun.
