Before Joining 2

Rena encounters the monster and the missing girl. She lures the monster away from the girl and takes it on herself. Defeating the monster and saving the day, the girl shows Rena that she was being helped by the spirits, who'd grown weak. Quest Completion Dialogue
  • The deeper Rena headed into the forest, the more ominous. She could hear strange sounds. Rena sensed something ahead and approached carefully.
  • STOMP, STOMP, STOMP...
  • Rena: 'Oh... It's not far from here.'
  • Rena concealed her presence and approached carefully.
  • She found a strange monster ahead. It was at least double the size of an average person.
  • Rena stopped in her tracks, shocked. It wasn't exactly the same, but she did see something similar before.
  • She thought about Lua's final moments.
  • Rena: I can't believe it... Why now? This is a nightmare...
  • Rena's body began to shake. She aimed her arrow at the monster instinctively, but her hands kept shaking.
  • Rena: 'I can't shoot when my mind is this turbulent. I need to calm down. It might be better to ask for back up before that monster makes a move...'
  • Suddenly, she heard a small, vulnerable voice.
  • Girl: Help me... Please...
  • Surprised, Rena tried to find where the voice was coming from. There, a small girl was hiding in a cave, more like an opening, made of rocks.
  • Even from a distance, Rena could see the girl shaking with a small box in her hands.
  • Girl: Please... Someone please help me...
  • A small voice, squeezed out in fear of being discovered by the monster.
  • That moment, Rena felt the shaking of her boxy, anxiety, and fear changing into will and determination.
  • Rena: 'I won't let that happen again!
  • Rena released the arrow.
  • PSSHH- THWACK!
  • Monster: KEEEEE-!!
  • The arrow pierced the monster's shoulder. It twisted in pain and roared when it noticed Rena. She felt a shiver down her back.
  • Rena: Others will soon show up to investigate. I need to lure that monster away from here!
  • Rena yelled as if she's talking to herself. She hoped the girl got the hidden message, as she couldn't afford to be more direct in case the monster understood.
  • Rena: (I'll lure the monster out, so stay put! Someone will come to save you!)
  • Rena ran towards the direction she came from. The monster shot towards her the moment she turned around.

Quest Completion Dialogue
  • Ren kept luring the monster out, shooting arrows to keep it's attention. The arrow rarely pierced it's hard skin, but she kept shooting at the same spot to slowly wound the monster.
  • Another shot, and more distance. She jumped from tree to tree and led the monster towards where there are no paths to slow it down further.
  • Rena bit her lower lip. Her heart was beating hard, but felt calmer than ever.
  • It's time to evict this unwelcomed guest from the holy forest and face her long nightmare.
  • Rena: 'Perhaps I wanted this to happen all along.'
  • Her hands were sweaty. Her bow wouldn't slip from mere sweat, but she gripped harder in determination.
  • She distanced herself, predicted the monster's movement and drew back the bowstring. A chilling light gathered around her hands.
  • Rena: 'The nightmare was to prepare me for this day!'
  • When she let go, the arrow pierced through the air and hit the monster on the forehead. The strong armor slowly, but surely began to crack.
  • Rena: 'Just a moment longer. The moment the armor cracks, I'll put everything I have into this one shot!'
  • Monster: KRRRAAAA-!!

  • Light gathered at the monster's mouth. It wasn't a pattern that it displayed while she was luring it, but Rena's acute senses gave out warning bells.

  • You!!
  • Rena has kept her distance all night, but this time, she closed her distance and kicked the monster's chin. SLAM! It was a clean hit.
  • Don't you know you should never play with fire in the forest?!
  • KRR...!!
  • The monster turned its head upwards from the impact of the kick. The light gathered at its mouth shot upwards, bright like lightning, before it dissipated.
  • Lowe: ... Whoa. Great kick.
  • Rena: Hey. You're early.
  • Lowe: Was that the reason for all the strange phenomenon? I've never seen it before.
  • The El Search Party member raised his sword, but Rena stopped him.
  • Rena: Wait, sorry, but I'll have to take care of this myself.
  • Lowe: Why is that?
  • Rena: '... It's probably not the best time to mention a painful past, tied to my nightmare and what feels like fate.'
  • Rena: There's the missing girl if you follow this path. She's hiding between rocks, and I wasn't able to check for injuries.
  • The man nodded in understanding.
  • Lowe: Alright. I'm sure with that light, others will soon be on their way. Just hold out until then.
  • Rena: Huhuhu, no need. I'll take care of it before anyone arrives!
  • The monster slowly got up the moment the El Search Party member left.
  • Rena: I see. The chin is your weak point. And... You get exhausted after shooting fire.
  • Chilling, bright light gathered in her hands again.
  • Rena: I may not be able to avenge her... But at least I can end my nightmare.
  • Rena charged forward swiftly.

The Elf learns of a surprising fact after saving the girl.

Quest Completion Dialogue
  • After a long night fiasco, the girl was safely returned to her family.
  • She was on high alert, making sure she wasn't discovered by the monster, so by the time the El Search Party found her, she passed out from exhaustion.
  • It seemed everyone in Ruben was awake, hoping for her return. The village was still bright with relief and joy.
  • Girl: I ugh... Really... grateful, hick! Sniffle...
  • Rena: You don't have to say it. I understand. It should be safe now that the monster is gone.
  • Girl: I was so, so scared... I'm sorry, I shouldn't cry when I'm all grown up... But... sob!
  • Rena: 'So she wasn't a child? It's really hard to gauge human age.'
  • Rena: I heard you were chased all night. Did you lose your way because you were being chased?
  • Girl: No... I knew my way, since I could see the Tree of El, however...
  • Girl: I couldn't let the monster approach the Tree of El or find the village, so I went deeper into the forest.
  • Rena: My... that was... that was very heroic. But you didn't even have a weapon, and you were almost caught.
  • Rena: You were lucky you could run away for so long.
  • Girl: Oh, it wasn't just me... Hold on a second...
  • She pulled out a small box and opened it before Rena's eyes.
  • There were spirits lying still in the box, surrounded by leaves. The light around the spirits were fading and weak.
  • Rena: The spirits...! You could see them too!
  • Girl: Yes. This one, and other spirits helped me escape. They covered the monster's eyes and made sound in another direction to lead it astray.
  • Girl: But... In the end, they got injured because of me. Their light is becoming weaker... Is there anything I can do for them?
  • Rena carefully took the box from the girl.
  • Rena: I'll take them to my village. The Elder should be able to help.
  • Girl: Thank you... I'm so glad! Please, I hope to see them again.
  • Rena said farewell to the girl and the villagers and headed back to her village.

Description

The Elder and the Elf talks about what happened last night.

Quest Completion Dialogue
  • She could see the Elf village from far away.
  • The village was in an uproar with the incident at night, the ominous light that flashed across the sky, and with Rena missing.
  • Rena: Ugh... I hope they don't scold me too much...
  • Rena collected herself, took a deep breath and headed towards the village. As expected, she was met with never-ending scolding and lectures.
  • Rena: 'Really! I'm not a child anymore. I'm all grown up!'
  • But she knew saying that would make her seem more immature. Rena listened to the scolding and lectures, and promised never to do it again.
  • Rena: I promise not to put myself in dangerous situations and not to sneak out at night.
  • Rena: 'At least... for a while!'
  • Rena was finally set free after the scolding. Rena pretended to go back home to rest, but headed towards the Elder's house.
  • The Elder handed her a freshly brewed cup of tea, as if she knew Rena was coming.

  • Rena gave Elder the box and explained what happened the night before.
  • Her nightmare, a quiet forest without spirits, the human girl, the weakened spirits, and the monster.

  • Elder Branwen didn't scold her or urge her, and nodded along.
  • She knew Rena from birth, and knew about Lua, so the Elder didn't ask any more questions or scold her.
  • The Elder merely accepted Rena's growth, and her overcoming her past wound.
  • Rena: Do you think the spirits will be ok?
  • Branwen: They should be fine if you leave them to rest. However... I'm more concerned about something else.
  • Branwen: You said the monster was bigger than most trees? Ruben Forest may be peaceful, but monsters like that aren't all that uncommon.
  • Branwen: However, those monsters were always small. They were aggressive, but not as dangerous as Alterasia. They were mostly playthings for mischievous spirits.
  • The Elder turned and faced the window. The Tree of El standing tall beneath the clear blue sky. It was a peaceful, familiar scene.
  • Branwen: But the world is changing. Monsters are getting stronger each day, while the spirits are becoming weaker, and there are less of them.
  • Rena: -
  • Branwen: The world heads towards new and unpredictable directions, but I'm afraid how this change might affect the rest of us.
  • Rena: ... Is there a way?
  • Branwen: I hope so.
  • The Elder turned and faced Rena. She was kind, as always, but Rena thought her eyes were piercing through her soul.
  • Branwen: We must find a way. Soon...
  • Rena: ... Yes.
  • Rena finished her tea, and headed out. The wind was blowing strong.
  • (WHHOOOSH....)
  • The wind, carrying the scent of the forest felt unfamiliar for once.
  • Rena: Change... The world changing...
  • Rena: Not everything can turn out favorably, but if we must find a way, I will gladly dedicate myself!
  • Rena: Because I'm no longer the weak... Yaaawn...
  • Rena: ... I think I'm going to pass out from sleep.
  • It was an important promise, but sleep came first.
  • She dragged her heavy, sleep deprived body towards her bed. The moment she laid down, Rena felt the slow sinking sensation envelop her like a blanket.
  • (WHHOOOSH....)
  • The wind blew again.
